CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

How would your dining table look in a future where nourishment is available to everyone?

Arts of the Working Class is happy to announce Souls for Foods, a food market for collective nutrition and modes of togetherness which will inhabit the courtyard of ATELIER GARDENS, the former Berliner Union Film Ateliers (BUFA) campus, on two separate occasions on June 20 and August 15, from 12-19h.

This multisensorial market will bring together artists, chefs, experimental foodies, trained culinary makers and bakers to (re)interpret the metabolism and trends of our pandemic times. As social restrictions have confined the majority of cultural activities to the virtual sphere, the market’s intersection of art and cuisine will pay a renewed attention to atmospheres, senses and crafts. Culinary knowledge, resulting from the collaboration between diverse agents and traditions, will be the point of departure to raise questions on productivity, consumption and social engagement in the austerity regime.

In addition to the main section – food and its derivatives – the market will be organized into different fields of practices connected to the ritual of sharing edible knowledge. Following the urgency to find new modes of existence within and beyond the art world, the models of organicity and collaboration will guide the mise-en-scène of the market. Conviviality between practices and goods will be fostered by the installation of the market where the participants, divided into pairs or groups, will be asked to cocurate and cohabit a stand.

As the title Souls for Foods suggests, the market will be not only be an occasion to give visibility to the souls which animate and nourish our cultural environment, but also provide a breathing space aimed at reactivating a system of value exchange – both economic and social – that has been until now anesthetized due to the ongoing global pandemic.

Just as with any other market, participants will be able to exchange their work in the currency of their preference.

Souls for Foods will abide by all necessary and required Covid-19 safety measures.

DISCLAIMER:

Souls for Foods brings together many publics and intentions, transcending the canonical format of the art show. Therefore, please keep in mind that interaction between people and objects, as is the case in most markets, won’t be hindered but encouraged. In accordance with this we strongly suggest to accurately evaluate the nature of your project, purchasable goods/artworks.

Souls for Foods is founded in the frame of a collaboration with the festival foodculture days for its 2021 edition, and is the first public manifestation curated by Arts of the Working Class for the ATELIER GARDENS, formerly known as BUFA/Berlin Union Film Ateliers, an infrastructure in-between and in-becoming, determined by the people living in its surroundings, in the Kiez of Tempelhof and beyond.
